Cleaning The Spray Foam Insulation From Interior Surfaces

Spray foam insulation is a superb method of insulating the home. Unfortunately, the foam insulation can sometimes get away from the installer and land on the surfaces inside your home. If you have spray foam insulation that needs to be cleaned up, you can do it fairly easily without causing damage to your home. Here, you will learn how to do just that.

Wood surfaces are the most difficult to clean because it is so easy to damage them during the cleaning process. You will need:

  • Plastic Putty Knife
  • Mineral Spirits
  • Clean Cloths
  • Masking Tape
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Furniture Polish

Start by using the putty knife to carefully scrape as much foam off of the wood as possible, making sure to keep the blade level as you scrape the surface.

Now, apply some mineral spirits to a clean cloth, cover the back-side of the cloth with plastic wrap and tape it to the area where the foam is. You want the mineral spirits to be positioned directly over the affected area – the plastic wrap just seals things up, keeps the cloth from drying and makes it possible for the tape to adhere.

Let the cloth sit for twenty minutes or so, remove the cloth and use the putty knife to very gently scrape away the foam. If this doesn't remove the foam the first time around, repeat the process until it does.

Polish your wood to seal it back up and you are done.

If the foam has landed on your vinyl windows and doors, fret not. You will need:

  • Plastic Razor Knife
  • Acetone – Fingernail Polish Remover
  • Clean Cloths
  • Water

Start by using the razor knife to scrape the foam off of the surface, making sure to keep the blade flat with the surface.

Now, apply acetone to the cloth and wipe the area repeatedly. This might take some time, but eventually, the foam will soften and come right off of the vinyl surface.

Finish up by wiping over the surface with a clean wet cloth to remove any residue from the foam or acetone.

Removing the spray foam from glass is easy as can be. Simply use a flat straight razor to scrape the foam off of the glass. Follow up with some glass cleaner and a clean cloth and your windows will be as clear as they were before the foam made its way onto it.

Tip: To get your windows completely clear and lint free, go over them once with a dry coffee filter after they are clean. This will remove the streaks and lint that might remain.
